Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital care, including semi-private rooms, meals, and nursing services. It also helps pay for short-term skilled nursing facility (SNF) care and home health services when medically necessary after a hospital stay. Hospice care is provided for individuals with a terminal illness, offering palliative care, counseling, medical equipment, and short-term respite for caregivers. While Part A covers many essential services, it does not pay for long-term custodial care or extended nursing home stays. Those needing future long-term care coverage may consider private options like long-term care insurance. Eligibility typically depends on work history and Medicare tax contributions, which can affect whether a premium is required.

Medicare Part B covers a range of outpatient and preventive services that help maintain overall health. This includes doctor visits, lab tests, outpatient care, and necessary home health services. It also covers durable medical equipment like wheelchairs, walkers, and oxygen equipment that support mobility and daily activities. Preventive benefits include wellness visits, vaccines, and screenings to detect health issues early. Part B also covers outpatient hospital services such as surgeries, chemotherapy, dialysis, and imaging like MRIs and CT scans. It also covers certain drugs administered in clinical settings, including infusion therapies and insulin via pump—essential for managing conditions like diabetes and cancer. Medicare Part B supports early detection, preventive care, and long-term health management.
(Drug coverage)
Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage and is available through standalone drug plans or Medicare Advantage Plans that include drug benefits. These plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare and must follow federal guidelines. Coverage details—such as the list of covered medications (formulary), out-of-pocket costs, and pharmacy networks—can vary significantly by plan. Part D helps reduce expenses for both generic and brand-name drugs, offering important financial protection. To avoid a late enrollment penalty, it’s important to sign up when first eligible unless you have other creditable drug coverage. Reviewing your plan each year ensures your current medications remain covered at an affordable cost and that you’re getting the best value available.

Medicare Advantage Plans, sometimes called "Part C" or "MA Plans," are an “all in one” alternative to Original Medicare. These “bundled” plans include Part A (Hospital Insurance), Part B (Medical Insurance), and usually Part D (Medicare drug coverage). Medicare Advantage Plans are offered by private companies approved by Medicare, and if you join one, you still have Medicare.
Plans may have lower out-of-pocket costs than Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage Plans must cover everything that Original Medicare does. Most plans offer extra benefits that Original Medicare doesn’t cover – like vision, dental, hearing, transportation, and more.
Medicare Prescription Drug Plan
(Part D).
These plans (sometimes called "PDPs") add drug coverage to Original Medicare, some Medicare Cost Plans, some Medicare Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) Plans.
Each Medicare Prescription Drug Plan has its own list of covered drugs (called a formulary). Many Medicare drug plans place drugs into different "tiers" on their formularies. Drugs in each tier have a different cost.
A drug in a lower tier will generally cost you less than a drug in a higher tier. In some cases, if your drug is on a higher tier and your prescriber thinks you need that drug instead of a similar drug on a lower tier, you or your prescriber can ask your plan for an exception to get a lower copayment.
